layton Powell IV (born Adam Clayton Powell Diago in 1962) is an American politician from the state of New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly from 2001to 2010. From 1992–1997, he served as New York City Council Member representing East Harlem and parts of the Upper West Side and the South Bronx. Beginning in 2001, Powell represented the 68th Assembly District, which includes parts of Harlem and East Harlem. In in the summer of 1993, Councilman Powell , visited BPYC with the Reverend Al Sharpton . In this photo, Powell is seen”Under the Tent” with Ret. Commodore Bobby Madison.

erend Al” Sharpton Jr. is an American Baptist minister, civil rights activist, television/radio talk show host and a trusted White House adviser who, according to 60 Minutes, has become President Barack Obama’s “go-to black leader.In 2004, he was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidential election. He hosts his own radio talk show, Keepin’ It Real, and he makes regular guest appearances on Fox News (such as on The O’Reilly Factor),CNN, and MSNBC. In 2011, he was named the host of MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, a nightly talk show. Rev. Al visited the BPYC in the summer of 1993. He came with a host of friends from his newly form National Action Network and is seen “Under the Tent” with Mrs. Juanita McKelvin.
George Holmes “Buddy” Tate was a jazz saxophonist and clarinetist.Tate was born in Sherman,
Texas, and began performing on alto saxophone. As a teenager in 1925, he played with his brother and their band called McCloud’s Night Owls.” Tate quickly switched to tenor saxophone making a name for himself in bands such as the one led by Andy Kirk. He joined Count Basie’s band in 1939 and stayed with him until 1948. He had been selected by Basie after the sudden death of Herschel Evans, which Tate stated he had predicted in a dream. After his period with Basie ended, he worked with several other bands before he found success on his own, starting in 1953 in Harlem. His group worked at the “Celebrity Club” from 1953 to 1974.In the late 1970s, he co-led a band with Paul Quinichette and worked with Benny Goodman. The 1990s he played with Lionel Hampton among others. In 1992 Buddy Tate came out to visited and in this photo is seen “Under the Tent” at the BPYC.
Carol Gordon is an active member of BPYC and was a 2012 Democratic candidate for District 8 of the New York State Senate. Gordon founded and manages Unspoken History Treasures, a collection of African-American artifacts. She has 30 years of experience in community and volunteer service. Gordon ran in the 2012 election for New York State Senate District 8. She ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012 and was defeated by incumbent Charles Fuschillo (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012. Gordon’s tagline is “Empowerment through Education and Information.” She lists “the economy, property taxes, the outsourcing of jobs and resources, eco-friendly development, and violence in homes, schools, and on our streets” as issues to find solutions for.
